We haven't even made it to January 20 (Trump inauguration). We already have major fires in our second largest city, terrorist attacks, talk of invading Greenland/Panama/Canada. almost no one talking about what we really need to do to cut carbon. Hospitals are full in my area and people talk about washing hands, but not about masking. I am already so weary. I don't know what is going to happen after January 21.

Just asking, not like I've been subtly not subtly sticking kink stuff in my work or anything.

What general advice did you learn from the episode?

For a few days now if I use my sh.itjust.works profile comments are slow to load and often posts timeout and refuse to load at all. I even tried posting this question using my sh.itjust.works profile and it wouldn't post at all. Is there something up with their servers or something?

I swear sometimes I feel like I'm reading a bad newspaper comment section, like everyone is a poorly trained AI that just spouts default politically-oriented replies. The New York Times comment section for any given topic (not just current events, also culture etc) is way more interesting than most of it here.

Lemmy has a strong tendency to criticize the US, and a lot of the critiques of certain issue with the US are valid. However, I started getting really tired of opening comment sections in innocuous and non-political posts only to see that someone somehow found a way to criticize the US in it. At first, I started thinking that maybe some Lemmy users are really unhappy and find criticizing a something stronger helped them feel better as if standing up to injustice was a passion of theirs. But, we don't see them do that with other targets, just the US. The more I notice and think about it, I'm starting be suspicious that some of those users and comments aren't authentic, but made to create divisiveness in the West and reject the US entirely. In other words, they may be Russian, Chinese, et al. agents working to feed a stream of propaganda in order to further cause chaos and lack of unity in the West as we have seen them do before.\

I’m a business analyst, and a big part of my job involves working with engineers and product managers to gather detailed, in-depth information. For reasons I don’t fully understand (though I have my theories), I often find that engineers, in particular, seem oddly reluctant to share the information I need. This makes the process more challenging than I’d like. Does anyone have tips or tricks for building trust with engineers to encourage them to share information more willingly and quickly?

I watch bodycam videos on YouTube. A ton of them come from red states; they're rural. I see the resistance to cops in red states as sort of "muh rights" but it occurs to me that Leftists (like me) may also stand up to bullshit (just not the same bullshit).

Several movie and TV sites have come and go where you can just visit and watch without even creating an account. Quality might not be as good as a paid service and they are no doubt in the grey-to-red zone legally. I don't see the same service for music.

I am about to begin receiving a benefit to the tune of an extra $2k per month that I don't have a need for. I'm fortunate enough that all my needs are met financially and this is truly bonus income. If it didn't exist, my life wouldn't change significantly, and it's not enough to quit my job. Trying to get others thoughts on what would be good uses of this money that would benefit me and my family.

I see a lot of people blaming tiktok and "brain rot" content for the increasing ADHD diagnoses, but I think its a matter of better detection, similar to how OCD and autism diagnosis have increased too.\

So I accidentally turned backup on with my butt or something the other day, and Google Photos decided it was fine to upload to the cloud all my photos which I keep locally on my device.

I want a single feed that I can customize and preferably weight based on how important I think something is.

I heard a bunch of explanations but most of them seem emotional and aggressive, and while I respect that this is an emotional subject, I can't really understand opinions that boil down to "theft" and are aggressive about it.

Idk if it's because of my ADHD or Depression but I struggled my whole life with finding a healthy balance to all these temptations that this world offers.

I don't have a good outlook on psychology as a field. It's all influenced by people for leverage and different countries can't even agree on what qualifies as what (e.g. the definition for social anxiety in one country could be considered the definition for agoraphobia in another). But I think watching Simon Whistler give a very debunked rundown on psychology ten years into his career was the last straw for me this week. Misrepresenting psychology has very annoying implications and it gets tiring to see it done over and over.

Will we know why had universe began, why there is something instead of nothing.

And obviously "making use" of it. Daily? Weekly? Twice X month?

Of course it's not an explicit expectation, but the news cycle is dominated by a mix of 24/7 news and daily summaries. It's rare that I see weekly, bi-weekly, monthly summaries. I'm thinking, is there really that much that can happen in a day and that warrants our attention? Most news are clickbait focused on the negative, making us feel depressed and feeds our negative emotions. I wouldn't be surprised if the news actively contributes to the mental health crisis.

Every account you ever had, every post/comment you ever posted, now has your real name, a photo of you, and your address, all just magically show up on the webpage right next to each of your posts/comments (also, no "hacking" could hide the info). All deleted posts/comments are magically restored and nothing you do (short of permanently shutting down the website and physical destruction of the servers) can delete them. (Any edits would still show every change you made.) How fucked are you?

An acquaintance just posted a pic of them being absolutely delighted with building a snowman and I realized I haven't done that in years. It also made me think about things I enjoyed doing as a kid, and (whether it be from mental issues or not) I can't quite recall anything that brought me joy.

I use a Linux distro with kde, so I have a lot of customization available. I like trying other distros in VMs, but stuff like windows (no need to copy really kde is similar by default) and Mac is a pain in the ass to use that way. so, I want to know what your os does that you think I should copy using kde's customization. I'm looking for Mac in particular (bc I haven't used it before) but any OS or desktop environment is fair game.

I have an older pair of Plantronics headphones (from 2018) and honestly there's nothing wrong with them. They still sound good. I replaced the earpads maybe 6 months ago because the originals wore out and split open. But now they're as good as new.
